town halls

Conference Crowd

basics

Every month, we host a free, online town hall that focuses on a different global issue relevant at the time. The dates of town halls are typically set a month in advance and last 1-1.5 hours long. Town halls operate in a similar structure to Jubilee’s “Middle Ground” series on YouTube: moderators will present a claim related to the chosen topic, and each participant will indicate whether they agree, disagree, or are unsure about their stance on the claim. The floor will then be open for anyone to discuss their thoughts, beliefs, or ideas on the topic.

THE PURPOSE

Our Town Hall program aims to combat the lack of civil political discourse spaces for students. In the modern day, perhaps more than ever, young people care deeply about political issues and the world around them. However, many of these people have limited access to spaces in which they can freely express their beliefs. Town halls present a rare opportunity for students to speak their minds and engage with those who believe differently than them. Through our Town Halls, SpeakUp is committed to fostering discussion in a safe and constructive way. Without honest conversations, progress cannot be made.
